Weight loss success story: ‘I was too fat to fit on a rollercoaster with my kids’

May 14, 2013 - Success Stories

Wayne Robinson, 37, had let his weight spiral out of control and soon started to worry that his sons would get bullied at school for having a fat dad. Wayne joined LighterLife and lost 18st in just 9 months, and now he’s the dad he always wanted to be…

Before LighterLife…
Having been in many situations where people have whispered about me, laughing at my size, I never wanted my sons to feel embarrassed for having a fat dad – or worse, be bullied about it! I’d avoided going to the school as much as I could so as not to embarrass them in front of their friends.

Now…
Finley, my youngest son, had his first nativity play in December 2012 and I went to watch. I wore a nice suit and I felt great. I had so many positive comments. I was proud as punch watching my son in the play, and I finally felt I was a dad my kids could be proud of.

Before LighterLife…
My job involved a lot of travelling. I never ate breakfast because I was always in a rush in the morning. I’d eat very little through the day and if I did, it would be a pasty or a burger at the services; I’d eat in my car most days. I’d get home around 7pm and while waiting for my dinner I’d have a can of lager and a sandwich.

Now…
My LighterLife Counsellor Paula Carruthers was a great support. Her group work helped me develop a healthy diet. I now have breakfast without fail. My wife and I plan our meals and, as a family, we manage our weight by using the LighterLife Management recipe book – so we’re all getting a healthy, balanced dinner. We love experimenting with new flavours.

Before LighterLife…
Ten years ago, I lost my mother to bowel cancer. When I turned 35, I had a letter from the hospital to go for a scan to check I was clear of the disease. I’d heard that the table only held 23st and I was worried that it would collapse with me on it. I couldn’t face going through the embarrassment, even for something as serious as bowel cancer, so I didn’t go to the appointment.

Now…
The first thing I did when I reached my LighterLife goal weight was book an appointment for a scan. During my consultation, my doctor didn’t even recognise me! After having the all clear, I couldn’t believe how stupid I’d been letting my weight stand in the way of my health.

Before LighterLife…
My wife is afraid of flying, so most years I take our three sons on holiday by myself. We’d always have a good time but I could never play and have fun with them. I’d be too embarrassed to go in the swimming pool and I wouldn’t even attempt to go on rides at a theme park, in case I got stuck in the seats!

Now…
Turning 37 was my best birthday ever. I was on holiday in Spain with my sons and we had the time of our lives! We went to a theme park, and for once I could go on rollercoasters without the fear of being too big for the seat. When we got back, my son Harry told me that it was the best holiday he’d ever had. The look of excitement on my sons’ faces will stay with me for ever.

good luck to you and congratulations. I would love to start the lighter life programme but as I am on benefits of £71 a week I cant afford it. Is there any other way that you know?

Hi Jackie, Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately at this time, you do have to pay to join the LighterLife programme and it’s not available on the NHS. Sorry we couldn’t be of more help.

Karen
