It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday and what better way to celebrate than with a truly inspirational mother and daughter success story! Julie and Abigail have both changed their lives with LighterLife.
Mum Julie and eldest daughter Abigail both had a significant amount of weight to lose. Julie, a sufferer of osteoarthritis was unable to walk unaided for long periods of time, and had a momentous birthday coming up in six months. She was determined not to ‘be fat and sixty’. Abigail was nearly 16 ½ stone and getting married, after seeing mum Julie’s amazing success she decided to join LighterLife too.
How was your weight affecting you before you joined LighterLife?
Julie: I was very fed up and hated how I looked; I love nice clothes but never felt attractive. I knew what I had to do but couldn’t seem to get my head (or my heart) around how to go about it.
Abi: The biggest issue with being vastly overweight is the head space you occupy! When you are that heavy, the world seems a difficult place. Everything is an effort, you feel like everyone is judging you.
What was the ‘lightbulb’ moment or goal that influenced your decision to join LighterLife?
Julie: I was six months away from my sixtieth birthday and decided I was not going to be fat and sixty so I contacted LighterLife Bramhall and came for my appointment, right away I felt I was dealing with a professional who knew what she was talking about. I had been to other diet companies and not enjoyed the experience.
Abi: I was on a friends hen party at Centre parcs one of the activities involved a zip wire but the maximum weight was 16 stone. Having to admit to my friends I didn’t meet the weight requirement was hideous! They were lovely about it but holding the coats and taking photos was not me!
What was your experience of LighterLife group support?
Julie: The first week or so I met my fellow ‘lifers’ they were mostly just like me, a bit scared but determined to give it a go. I enjoyed the packs and stuck to the program religiously, in the first week I lost 9lbs and was thrilled. I felt confident that I knew exactly what I could eat and drink which made it easier for me. I started LighterLife a size 18, and on my sixtieth birthday I was a size 10, a size I’d never been before. I have done the management programme for 2 ½ years now and have changed my relationship with food. I absolutely love the way I look and feel now and feel in control. Still attending management sessions helps me focus, I think that the sessions are the most important part.
Abi: The LighterLife group I started in was fab and I feel really lucky to have found that group. I can still hear the advice from the others from my first session ‘Do I need it, what is the pay off, how will I feel after’. I had tried many other diet clubs and all had left me infuriated constantly discussing food. LighterLife was very different, for the better. I found I needed the group support to help me deal with social situations and diet saboteurs!
What changes has losing weight made on your life?
Julie: LighterLife has helped me to a happier place, I may not walk like a spring chicken but I feel really good about myself and about my future.
Abi: Being able to go into shops and try everything on and look good is a buzz. I’m 11 ½ stone and a size 12 with a new addiction, to Ted Baker and Victoria’s secret!
What would you say to anyone thinking about joining LighterLife?
Julie: For all you people out there who are thinking about it. DO IT you won’t regret it.
Abi, how much does your mum mean to you?
Abi: What I love about my mum is her positive attitude to life – nothing is impossible. Her single mindedness really inspires me. She really encouraged me through the programme and has treated me with non-food treats on occasion i.e. buying both dresses as she couldn’t decide which I looked nicer in!!!!
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL YOU LOVELY INSPIRING MUMS OUT THERE!
