The idea of being an overweight mother of the bride gave Julie Stott the inspiration and focus she needed to do something about her weight. Here, she tells us how she lost 8st with LighterLife and felt fabulous on her daughter’s big day…
Why did you choose LighterLife over other weight loss programmes?
After years of doing little exercise and making unhealthy food choices, I eventually reached 20st 4lb. I’d tried other diets in the past but I was never very successful with them. I think the main reason I joined LighterLife was because it was something I hadn’t tried before. I was nervous about it but decided it was worth a try.
At your biggest, how did you feel?
At my biggest, I felt fat and miserable. Before I joined LighterLife I’d been on a city break with my husband. I was so miserable and uncomfortable walking around the sights, I knew I had to change something. Then my daughter got engaged so I had a fixed date and target to work towards.
When did you reach your LighterLife goal weight?
I started LighterLife in May 2011 and I reached my goal weight in May 2012 – three months before the wedding. It was an amazing sense of achievement. However, I knew the next step, LighterLife Management, was just as important as reaching my goal. Previously, when I had lost weight on other programmes, I’d always thought ‘right, that’s it’ and promptly returned to old habits. However, LighterLife Management taught me how to eat healthily and sensibly.
How did you find the LighterLife group meetings?
My group was brilliant! It made me realise that all the weird thoughts and feelings I had around food and my weight weren’t really that weird at all. Lots of other people went through the same struggles as me and it was nice to be able to talk about them with people who were feeling the same way.
How did you feel in your outfit on the day of your daughter’s wedding?
It was a great feeling going shopping for my mother-of-the-bride outfit. I was very easily fitting into size 12 dresses and had much more choice than I would have had if I was still a size 22. I felt absolutely amazing on the day. I was so proud of my daughter, and to be able to enjoy the day without feeling self conscious about my size was just great.
How has your life changed since losing weight?
These days, I just enjoy life so much more. I’ve got more energy and a new zest for life. I’ve always loved horses but I’ve always been too heavy to ride them. Now, I ride twice a week and I love it!
