Samantha Carlin collage_smallSamantha Carlin, 28, from Kenilworth weighed 13 stone 6lbs before starting LighterLife in 2011. She now weighs 8 stone 6lbs and is maintaining her weight. She got married last month – in a beautiful size 10 dress, having reached her goal weight. Here, she tells us about her journey.

LighterLife: What was the turning point for you to want to lose weight?
Samantha: I decided to leave the UK with my boyfriend for a new opportunity in Dubai. I had been carrying this weight around with me for quite some time and decided that since I was making this big life change, I should shed it once and for all.

LighterLife: What are the biggest changes you’ve noticed since joining LighterLife?
Samantha: I weighed 13 stone 6lbs before I started, and after completing the 12-week programme in 2011, I’d made it to 11 stone 9 lbs. Since then, I’ve moved abroad and have continued to lose weight on my own, using the principles I learned on LighterLife. I’m now 8 stone 6lbs and it’s completely changed my life. I’m much more confident, positive and happy since starting LighterLife.

It’s completely changed the way I think about food. The type and amount of food I consume now is totally different – I eat portions of varied foods but I have drastically reduced the number of carbs and sugars. Exercise has also become a big part of my life and I now run or swim daily.

LighterLife: What’s the best piece of information you’ve received to keep you motivated?
Samantha: It’s a journey. There will be good days and bad days – after all, I’m only human! But I don’t give up when I have a bad day, and when I have a good day, I make sure to celebrate my achievements. That’s what keeps me going.

LighterLife: What was the biggest challenge for you whilst being on LighterLife?
Samantha: I started my journey just before Christmas, and at the start of the programme when I was abstaining from conventional food and using foodpacks, it was sometimes awkward to explain to people at social events why I wasn’t drinking alcohol or eating at buffets. This got easier as time went on though, and my friends and family saw how determined I was make the changes. They were the ones who supported me through good and bad days, and it actually made my relationships stronger.

LighterLife: What piece of advice would you give to someone starting out on their LighterLife journey?
Samantha: You should enter the journey with an open mind, attend the meetings and get involved in the group sessions. They really are helpful and teach you a lot. Most importantly, stick with it. Be determined, and you will see results!
