Elizabeth Nocton, 35, from Buxton lost 4 stone 3lbs in just three and a half months with LighterLife and has reinvented herself as runner. Here, she tells us how it’s changed her life.
Many clients tell us that doing LighterLife makes them rethink their lifestyle and this was certainly true for Elizabeth. Since reaching her weight loss goal, she has completed two half marathons, a 5K and a 10K race and has even run the London Marathon. Here, she tells us how attending her local LighterLife group in Hyde made this all possible.
LighterLife: What made you decide to start LighterLife?
Elizabeth: My weight has yo-yoed all my adult life and really bothered me. I went on my first ‘diet’ aged 16 as I thought I was fat. In fact, I was 10st 8lb and probably completely healthy but this started a cyclical pattern of dieting and losing weight, then eating and gaining weight. It was a pattern that I’d never managed to break. One of my work colleagues joined LighterLife and got great results, which encouraged me to get started right away.
Despite some rocky patches along the way, I succeeded in losing weight and getting to a healthy BMI.
LighterLife: What’s your favourite thing so far about your LighterLife experience?
Elizabeth: The groups are small and intimate, making it great for meeting people. Plus the support from my Counsellor, Carol Graves, and the other members was invaluable. I stuck to the programme, never once thinking of giving up.
The group doesn’t change, so you’re able to get to know everyone and support each other. When I was struggling, everyone reminded me how far I’d come and encouraged me not to give up. With their support, I got there in the end. Carol is fantastic at steering and guiding you when you are struggling and seeking advice. Being a part of my LighterLife group helped me get to grips with it all – it’s a real community and everyone is in the same boat.
LighterLife: Since losing the weight, have you done any new things you couldn’t do before?
Elizabeth: Yes, I haven’t looked back since. I’ve completed a half marathon in 2 hours 44 seconds, and a 22-mile multi-terrain race called the ‘Grindleford Gallop’. I couldn’t even contemplate doing anything like this before LighterLife! On 13 April this year, I finally fulfilled my goal of running the London Marathon – which felt amazing. Since then, I’ve taken up fell racing and joined the Buxton Athletics Club, where I’ve met loads of new people. That’s something I’d never have had the confidence to do before I lost the weight. None of this would have been possible without LighterLife. I feel like I’ve been given a new lease of life, there’s definitely no going back now!
LighterLife: What keeps you motivated?
Elizabeth: Before LighterLife, I went to the London Marathon as a spectator, as my sister was running in it. Watching my sister and all the other runners – from the elite athletes, even to those in fancy dress – was so inspiring. All I wanted to do was jump over the barrier and join them! It was then and there that I decided I was going to be one the other side of that barrier in 2014. I knew that I needed to lose weight for this to happen. When I was in my group, it was as if someone had finally flicked that switch in my head. I was finally able to tell myself that this time I would not only lose the weight, but keep it off too. And I have!
LighterLife: If you could give one piece of advice to other members what would it be?
Elizabeth: I’d encourage everyone to get on board with LighterLife if they need to shift the weight and don’t get disheartened when the weight loss slows down. I had a week when I didn’t lose anything, followed by a week of only losing a small amount and it was heartrending. But then in the end, over the course of my journey I managed to lose 4 stone 3 lbs. It can be really tough at times but keep going as you’ll see the benefits and make it all feel worth it. Also I’d recommend running to LighterLifers once they’ve lost the initial weight. I was able to take it up properly and with the help of LighterLife’s Management programme, and I now maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. These changes have become routine and something I don’t even question. I not only look different but I’ve changed mentally too! Keep motivated and, in time, you will see the desired results!
