Margaret Pemblington, 65, from Mansfield joined LighterLife in June 2012 and lost a total of 6 stone 7lbs in seven months.
LighterLife: What made you decide to start LighterLife?
Margaret: Have you ever heard that saying ‘been there, got the T shirt’? When it comes to dieting, that was me! I’ve been on so many diets but I always ended up putting the weight back on again quickly, so I obviously wasn’t learning anything from them. I first heard about LighterLife when my daughter-in-law Helen joined in 2012. She lost the weight quickly, looked so happy and healthy and had so much more energy.
I had been very low and depressed about my health – I’d suffered pains in my knees, backache and I had a fear of getting diabetes. My weight had ballooned to 18 stone 5 ¼ lbs and I no longer had the energy to play with my grandchildren. I knew something had to change, and that’s when I decided to give LighterLife a chance.
LighterLife: What’s your favourite thing so far about your LighterLife experience?
Margaret: At first, I wasn’t sure if LighterLife was for me but after I plucked up the courage to start, I discovered that the group discussions were really helpful – it was so inspiring to listen to others’ experiences and the wise words of Debbie, our counsellor. It really motivated me.
LighterLife: What keeps you motivated?
Margaret: The weight has come off steadily each week, which has been really encouraging. Now I have reached the weight I am comfortable with for my age and height and I’m maintaining it well. I have not felt so well and healthy for years. I’ve been asthmatic since birth, but I haven’t had to use my sprays since losing the weight. I can even use a skipping rope in the back garden with my granddaughter – she loves it when nanna skips with her! Life is so good and I just think of all these positive benefits I’ve experienced since losing the weight, and that keeps me motivated.
LighterLife: What’s been your biggest challenge so far on your weight loss journey?
Margaret: I have to be honest, the first four days were hard. I found the Foodpacks hard to get used to. After the fourth day, I had a complete turnaround – I started to discover packs that I liked and best of all, I wasn’t hungry. After my second weigh-in I had lost 9 ¾ lbs, and the following week I lost 6lbs – that’s over a stone in just two weeks. This had never happened to me before and I felt so good. Talking about how I was feeling in the group sessions and knowing that there were others in the same boat really helped.
LighterLife: If you could give one piece of advice to other members, what would it be?
Margaret: Stick with it. I had a really tough time in my first week of LighterLife, but once I got over that hurdle, it wasn’t as hard and I started to see some really amazing results. There will be times when you struggle, but you need to remember that lots of people go through it, you’re not alone and you can do it if you put your mind to it. It’s also really important to keep attending class each week for inspiration and guidance. Good luck with your new life ahead, it will be fantastic.
