A cowgirl’s guide to living a LighterLife

October 8, 2014 - Success Stories

IMG_4724Look at me now! After losing 3st 6lbs in four months with LighterLife, I’ve been able to fulfill my dream of becoming a cowgirl in Montana. As the pounds started to drop off, I was able to reassess my life and make the changes needed to become a healthier, happier person. Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: I got motivated
Four years ago I was a bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding. We all had to wear strapless dresses that meant my arms were on show, in which always made me feel very uncomfortable. All the other bridesmaids looked gorgeous but when I’d look back at photos I’d feel like I was the fat one in the group. So, when my sister started organising her wedding for 2012, I thought how important it was for me to feel good about myself. I wanted to be able to look at photos and not get upset, so I felt compelled to make a change.

Step 2: I found support
I looked up my local LighterLife centre in Mid Sussex and went along to a group session led by Anne, who’s the group Counsellor. I kept going because Anne and the group were amazing. Their help in overcoming my problems was invaluable, through all my ups and downs they were there to support me and keep me on track every step of the way.

Step 3: I set goals
Through my group sessions I learnt about goal setting. It was in this session I decided to start running and two years on I haven’t stopped! I continue to run a few times each week, which helps me to stay fit and healthy.

I’ve since decided to quit smoking, and at first it worried me that I might use food as compensation. But as I continue to exercise and eat well, I’ve managed to kick this habit too.

Step 4: I challenged negativity
My biggest challenge whilst on the LighterLife programme was dealing with other people’s negativity. They’d shoot me down for being on a VLCD (very-low-calorie diet) as they didn’t understand the nutritional side of LighterLife. I’d constantly be defending myself from people saying things like ‘oh you’ve lost weight so fast’ and ‘you shouldn’t only be eating bars’, but I tried to not let it bother me, as I knew I was getting 100% of my recommended nutrition.

Step 5: I followed my dreams
During one of my group sessions, we were asked to create a dream board to include all our hopes and aspirations for the future. One of my lifelong dreams has always been to go to a ranch in Montana and be a cowgirl, so my dream board was based around that.
Fast forward to September 2014 and I took the trip! LighterLife helped give me the confidence to achieve it. It transformed my mindset as well as my waist size. I now realise I can achieve anything I want to! If I can do it so can you!

beforeafterLizLighterLife is such a great programme – it was fascinating to put myself under the microscope to find out why I behaved the way I did. I learnt so much and soon realised that I was overeating to compensate for my unhappiness in my previous job. Addressing the real reasons for my bad habits was a real eye-opener. I have now learnt that if there is something I’m unhappy about, I don’t bury my feelings and overeat; instead I now deal with it. It’s worked for me and it could work for you too, just think before you know it you could be living your life dream!

I’m Liz’s Dad and I wanted to say that I am so proud of what Liz has achieved. She received terrific support from Anne at LighterLife and I firmly believe that the LighterLife weight loss programme has changed her life. Well done to everyone in Liz’s group, thanks to Anne and lots of love to my amazing daughter!!
