LighterLife living: How to make better decisions

1. Set a goal
It’s important to know what you want before you go for it. For example, if you want to move house, ask yourself: ‘Do I really want to live somewhere else? Or am I just bored with my current place?’ Don’t make a decision based on the wrong problem.

2. Don’t rush
People tend to make bad decisions when they’re stressed. When facing a difficult decision, use your conscious brain to gather the information you need and then take a break. Go for a walk or make a cup of tea. This gives the unconscious brain time to work and gather your thoughts. The decision you make afterwards is more likely to be the right one.

3. Don’t be seduced by marketing
Being aware of biases can stop you from making rash decisions. For example: buy-one, get-one-free offers in shops are only good value if you need the products in the first place. We’re susceptible to how information is framed, especially when shopping, so bear this in mind and you’ll think more clearly.
