LighterLife: what is your favourite decade that the Queen has ruled in?

June 12, 2012 - News

The LighterLife Facebook community had a bit of fun for the Queen’s Jubilee last Thursday when we ran a Jubilee poll. We asked our fans to vote for their favourite decade that the Queen has ruled in…

50’s – Elegant suits and Elvis Presley
60’s – Mini skirts, bell-bottomed jeans and the Beatles
70’s – Platforms and disco dancing
80’s – Perms, shoulder pads and Madonna
90’s – Tank tops and Girl Power
10’s – Royal Wedding AND the Jubilee celebrations!

…so without further ado, let’s announce the winner!  Drum roll please….

It’s the 80’s!!

The 80’s was your favourite decade, and why wouldn’t it be? These were the years of perms, shoulder pads and Madonna – not to mention Kylie Minogue and Jason Donavan’s whirlwind romance. The decade where there was nothing better than putting on your legwarmers and heading down to the arcade to play Pac Man.

And just over a week ago 80’s band Madness turned the Queen’s house, Buckingham Palace, into their very own terraced street thanks to some amazing visuals at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert.

The 50’s saw the coronation of Elizabeth II, in which she was crowned Queen of not only the United Kingdom, but Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon and Pakistan – as well as becoming Head of the Commonwealth. Phew. This was aired on television, which only a few households owned and street parties were held all over the country.

Not only was the Queen of England crowned, so was Elvis Presley, the King of Rock’n’Roll. Nicknamed ‘Elvis the Pelvis’, his dance moves and slick hairstyles took the world by storm.

The 60’s, The Beatles, hippies, mini skirts and bell-bottomed jeans. An era of music and fashion in the UK, not forgetting Scooby-Doo and Thunderbirds!

The 70’s came last in our poll, our Facebook community obviously aren’t too fond of their funky disco and platform memories! The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977 lighting a huge bonfire on top of a hill in Windsor.

The 90’s, the decade of girl power, Oasis, tanks tops and The Simpsons. This decade also saw the sad death of Princess Diana, which pulled on the nations heartstrings.

The Noughties: Now, here we are celebrating the Queens 60th year of reign and the Olympics are coming to the UK!

It has definitely been an eventful 60 years!Which is your favourite decade? Did you sport an 80’s perm or a 90’s tank top?
