NICE hail weight loss groups as solution to UK obesity problem

May 28, 2014 - News

466059027_HRLighterLife have welcomed new guidelines from the NICE that recommends that overweight people sign up to 12-week weight loss groups with the aim of losing 3% of their body weight and keeping it off for life.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says that weight loss groups are a cost-effective way of combating soaring obesity rates in the UK, and claim that even if patients lose less than a stone, it will save the NHS money by reducing the number of people who go on to develop serious illnesses – such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease.

Professor Mike Kelly, the director of the centre for public health at NICE, said the guidelines were about lifelong change rather than yo-yo dieting – and that required achievable goals.

He said: “It’s not just a question of ‘for goodness sake pull yourself together and lose a stone’ – it doesn’t work like that. People find it difficult to do – it’s not something you can just wake up one morning and decide I’m going to lose 10 pounds, it takes resolve, it takes encouragement.”

Behavioural change
Commenting on the news, Dr Matt Capehorn, Medical Director at LighterLife, said: “We’ve been working with NICE for a number of years and actively contributing to the debate around weight loss groups being an effective form of weight loss and weight management, over more extreme measures such as bariatric surgery, which puts increased pressure on the NHS.

“Losing weight in a supported group environment, not only eases the burden on the NHS but has proven to be an effective way to lose weight and keep it off in the long-term.

“While conventional slimming groups are a great way to help people lose weight, behavioural change is the key to long-term weight management – and that’s what LighterLife is all about. Our groups have a proven track record of helping patients with severe or complex weight problems because they don’t just don’t just focus on the physical changes of weight loss but also help people to recognise the emotional reasons why they overeat – which is what will help create long-term change.

“By focusing on lifelong change, rather than short-term gains we see a significant increase in the number of people who keep the weight off long-term.

Clients on our Total programme typically lose 3 stone in 3 months and studies have shown that people who do the LighterLife programme maintain a 10% weight reduction over 1-3 years.

Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on sites I stumbleupon everyday.
It’s always helpful to read through articles from other authors and use a little something from their websites.
