LighterLife have welcomed new guidelines from the NICE that recommends that overweight people sign up to 12-week weight loss groups with the aim of losing 3% of their body weight and keeping it off for life.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says that weight loss groups are a cost-effective way of combating soaring obesity rates in the UK, and claim that even if patients lose less than a stone, it will save the NHS money by reducing the number of people who go on to develop serious illnesses – such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease.
Professor Mike Kelly, the director of the centre for public health at NICE, said the guidelines were about lifelong change rather than yo-yo dieting – and that required achievable goals.
He said: “It’s not just a question of ‘for goodness sake pull yourself together and lose a stone’ – it doesn’t work like that. People find it difficult to do – it’s not something you can just wake up one morning and decide I’m going to lose 10 pounds, it takes resolve, it takes encouragement.”
