Helen Shead is currently following the LighterLife Management programme having first joined LighterLife in December last year on our Total programme.
There is nothing we love more than to hear from our Management clients, so we asked Helen to come in for a chat! Helen was positively jumping up and down with excitement having just been made a London 2012 Volunteer Performer! Helen was thrilled at the prospect of appearing centre stage in the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony, which took place last night.
Helen was part of the ‘Trialblazer Olympic Team’ and spent 7 months interviewing potential Games Makers. She feels a real connection with the Paralympics as she works in an inclusive school, and is inspired all the time by just how much these brave people achieve. Helen auditioned for the role in February 2012 after losing 2 stone on her LighterLife journey.
‘My weight loss gave me the confidence to go ahead and audition!’
For the last 10 years Helen had been unable to control her weight in the way that she was able to when she was younger. There was no obvious reason for the weight gain, she saw GPs and did every diet available but continued to gain weight. Helen didn’t give in and let this mystery beat her, instead she made the positive decision to join the LighterLife family. The trigger for Helen to join LighterLife was her upcoming 40th birthday, which took place in March this year; she wanted to feel great on her big day.
‘I joined LighterLife to reclaim my life and it was the best decision I ever made. I had a very supportive counsellor, Heather Newham. For the first time in my life, she helped me gain control.’
And Helen is now very much control of her new active lifestyle. She is coping incredibly well on the Management programme, armed with the tools to manage her weight long-term.
‘I’m managing everything so much better, not just my weight. I regularly run with my local running club and I’m just about to start a new job as a head teacher, so this is truly a really exciting time for me!’
Being part of the Opening Ceremony has been the icing on the cake in bringing back Helen’s self confidence. For her this adventure sums up her LighterLife journey – living a fulfilled and exciting life. Her commitment to volunteering for the Trailblazer Olympic Team and London 2012 Ceremonies has really helped her stay focused and on track.
‘I look in the mirror now and see Helen the teenager.’
Helen signed off her chat with us by exclaiming her sincere thanks to all of her friends and family.
‘I’ve had so much support from my friends and family, they helped me get to the point where I was ready to take action, the point where I joined LighterLife, but ultimately it was my decision. You can only make a life-changing decision like this when you’re ready and fully committed.’
Thank you Helen for sharing your journey with us and a huge congratulations for featuring in the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony – what an amazing achievement!
