Dr Hilary Jones is back on our LighterLife Twitter page – To answer you health and weight loss questions

April 4, 2012 - Dr Hilary Jones, Health & Nutrition

LighterLife followers once again came together on Twitter to talk to the lovely Dr Hilary Jones for another of our live monthly Twitter question and answer sessions. Our followers tweeted us their questions about health and nutrition and leading a lighter life using the #AskDrHilary hashtag and this is what he had to say:

Question: What would you say about doing a no carb diet? Lots of people say it’s the best way to lose weight!

Dr Hilary Jones’ answer: I would say it’s unsustainable. Halitosis? Fatigue? Deprivation? Still keen? Go for low carbs instead of no carbs. It is doable but without the downside.

I have been going through a lot of stress and my weight loss has slowed – can stress do this?

Only if you eat for comfort. Nervous energy can burn calories and exercise helps both. Weight loss always slows so don’t be put off by this, instead look at the long term goals and stay motivated.

What’s your stance on taking vitamins and supplements during the programme?

You shouldn’t need to take vitamins and supplements, as the programme is nutritionally complete. That’s the benefit of this plan. When you do return to normal eating however, the occasional multi-vitamin will do no harm.

Do you have any tips on the best way to deal with wrinkly tummy skin?

Difficult. Elasticity in the skin cannot be replaced, but tummy toning exercises do work. Surgery which can help with wrinkly skin can be very costly as it isn’t available on the NHS.

Will firming up up over time work or is there a firming product I could use to help it along the way?

There’s no product I know of that has proven to tone wrinkly skin. Exercise tones muscles and burns some of the underskin fat.

I have a real sweet tooth, can you recommend an alternative to chocolate that I can try?

I once met Donna Hartley, the Olympic hurdler, who could make one fruit pastel last for 10 minutes. Sweet, tangy and far less calories than chocolate. Dried fruit is healthy too and very sweet, so there are ways around a sweet tooth.

How much exercise should I be doing on Total?

Exercise regularly, as you will still have sufficient calories for energy on the Total programme. It is much easier to lose weight when physically active!

I’m really struggling with the programme at the moment, what can I do?

Talk to your LighterLife weight-management Counsellor to re-asses what is happening. An adjustment might make all the difference, together with a long term plan on maintenance.

Dr Hilary ended the chat with some final words of encouragement: Stay motivated, stay strong and remember the opportunity to wear smaller sizes this summer is fast approaching!

Dr Hilary Jones is back next month for another live Twitter chat. If you have any questions about how to achieve healthy weight loss then get them ready! If this has convinced you to try LighterLife please visit the LighterLife website to find out more…
